Reader's Fitness Challenge - Join In!

Late last year, I got a new day job, which I love. But in the process, I also stopped walking every day, which had been part of my routine for almost nine months. I was working full time, with a major commute, and I wasn't always around when my husband/walking partner was able to get his walk in.

Then there was the office situation. Until I took this job, I worked from home, so it wasn't quite as hard avoiding unhealthy treats - I just didn't buy them! Unfortunately, my new office mates were quite generous with their candy bowls and homemade snacks.

The combination managed to undo the hard work I'd done last year. Since March, I'd lost almost twenty pounds. As of last week, I've gained almost all of it back.

So I jumped at the chance to become a team leader for Lucy Monroe's Fitness Challenge. There are some great prizes, of course, but more important to me was the opportunity to be more accountable for healthy living. And I just know my team is going to kick butt. :)

So why not join in? Head on over to Lucy's page and sign up, and on April 1 we can start cheering each other on in our weight loss/healthy lifestyle pursuits.

A Milestone For ESS Fans!

Eric Sheffer Stevens in Body Of Proof, airing this spring.

Happy hump day!

Time is flying for me these days, probably due to baseball/fastpitch eating up huge swathes of our family schedule, and I keep turning around wondering where the hell that day/week/month went when I wasn't looking.

It's also flying for my friends over on http://ericshefferstevens.com/, who are about to celebrate their one year anniversary next month. They asked if I'd be willing to spread the news about a contest they're holding in honor of this milestone, so here are the deets:

On May 17th, we will be celebrating our one year anniversary at ericshefferstevens.com. It's been a great year of meeting new friends, learning new skills, campaigning with everything we've had in us and enjoying the talents of one amazing actor. We've laughed, squeed, fallen in love and cried our hearts out as a fandom. Now Eric is moving on to new roles and developing new characters for us to love. We hope you will all stick with us as we continue to follow his career. I think we are all in for an amazing ride.

Since this is our 1st anniversary, the Crew has decided to share a few gifts with some of our friends in the Eric Sheffer Stevens community but we'd like a little something from you too. During the month of April we'd like Eric's fans to drop us a note on the website (by clicking the "Contact Us" in the top right corner) and share some of the following with us...

*Tell us about your year as an ESS fan...highs, lows anything special you'd like to share
*Tell us what you like or would change about the site/forum, anything that stood out for you
*Tell us any ideas you have or anything you'd like to see on ESS.com/ ESS fan forum (not that we can make any promises...every member of the Crew is still working on a huge learning curve when it comes to web stuff)

We are hoping to add a page or two to the website with quotes from as many fans as possible. Then on May 17th we will randomly draw 6 names from the list of fans that participated and share one of these gifts with them. We will post the names on the forum and contact you for your addresses. (Yes we will ship to wherever!)

Thanks again for helping us make ESS.com and the ESS fan forum such a great place to hang out and follow Eric and his career.

The Crew/Crew Friends

So there you go! Have a great rest of the week!

How Did I Break My Nose - the WINNER!

So much fun!

I got some great entries, both here and on Facebook, so I had a friend pick a number at random and the winner is:

Maia Strong!

Congrats, Maia! Contact me off-blog and I'll get your prize to you, which is a bag of See's Candy Sour Hearts, in honor of the holiday. :) Hope you enjoy!

And thanks to everyone who participated! Your stories provided so much fun and enjoyment, and gave me something humorous to share when people asked "what happened?"

I Need A Better Story!

So, earlier this week I broke my nose.

(If you follow me on Twitter or Facebook, you probably already knew this.)

It was a stupid accident - I tripped and fell into some concrete stairs. I'm very lucky that it was only my nose that was injured, and in a few weeks I should be as good as new.

But the story of how it happened? Boring. Pedestrian. The opposite of interesting.

I need a better story.

I've gotten some good suggestions so far:

1. Cage fighting

2. Interrupted a jewelry heist

3. Saved an elderly woman from a mugging

But I want more! So that's where you come in. Post your best "how Kate broke her nose" story in the comments, and I'll choose a winner. Contest runs through Monday Feb 7 at 11:59 pm, PST. Prize to be announced!

So get creative, and good luck!

Book *WIN* Tuesday - Who Won the NOH8 Book?

The past couple of weeks I've been keeping track of tweets, comments, and messages on the blog, twitter or Facebook. All comments/tweets/messages were an entry to win a signed copy of Coming Together Against H8, a fundraiser for the NOH8 campaign. I tossed them all in a basket, had GPS draw a name, and the winner is:

Colleen Burns!

So congrats, Colleen! Send me your address off-list and I'll get the book to you.

And thanks to everyone else for posting/tweeting/commenting!

NO H8 - A Contest!

In keeping with the It Gets Better theme this week on my blog, I thought I'd hold a contest for a very special prize, one I brought home from RT. Unfortunately, I did such a good job unpacking and putting stuff away that I forgot I had it until skimming my bookshelf earlier this week.

What is it, you say? Why, I'm glad you asked. It's an autographed copy of Coming Together Against H8, a fundraiser for the NOH8 campaign. And it's not just signed by one author - I took it around at the book fair and got autographs from quite a few participants. It's pretty cool, actually.

So I'm going to give it away, with multiple ways to enter. For every comment here, on Twitter, or on Facebook, you'll get one entry. For every retweet on Twitter or use of the hashtag #NOH8fromKate, one entry. And at the end of the week, I'll draw from every entry to choose a winner. (If the winner is from a country where this book cannot be mailed, for whatever reason, I'll substitute a free ebook.)

So there you go. Easy as pie. Just comment/retweet/hashtag, and earn an entry to win! (Commenting counts on any blog post this week as well, not just this one.) So good luck!

Comment topic: What book/movie are you most looking forward to in the next few months?

Book BIN Wednesday - One Dance With A Duke

Squeee! Tessa Dare has a new book out - the start of a brand new trilogy! Here are the deets:

True temptation begins at midnight…

A handsome and reclusive horse breeder, Spencer Dumarque, the fourth Duke of Morland, is a member of the exclusive Stud Club, an organization so select it has only ten members — yet membership is attainable to anyone with luck. And Spencer has plenty of it, along with an obsession with a prize horse, a dark secret, and, now, a reputation as the dashing “Duke of Midnight.” Each evening he selects one lady for a breathtaking midnight waltz. But none of the women catch his interest, and nobody ever bests the duke — until Lady Amelia d’Orsay tries her luck.

In a moment of desperation, the unconventional beauty claims the duke’s dance and unwittingly steals his heart. When Amelia demands that Spencer forgive her scapegrace brother’s debts, she never imagines that her game of wits and words will lead to breathless passion and a steamy proposal. Still, Spencer is a man of mystery, perhaps connected to the shocking murder of the Stud Club’s founder. Will Amelia lose her heart in this reckless wager or win everlasting love?

Contest Week - Win a Tote From RT!

So yes, I've been back from RT for a few weeks, but the day job has been on fast-forward since I got back and I'm just getting a chance to breathe again. I posted some photos on Nine Naughty Novelists, and held a contest on Twitter, but wanted to share the fun with you here as well.

So:

From now until Friday, May 21, at midnight PDT, all comments on the blog will be entries to win a tote bag full of goodies from RT. There'll be books, swag, candy - all sorts of fun stuff to enjoy. So comment on this post, on posts from the rest of the week, comment on all of them - each comment is an entry to win!

To kick off the contest, here's a topic to discuss:

What book are you most looking forward to being released soon?

RT Week -- Where To Find Me!

In just a few hours I'll be heading to Ohio for my very first RT Convention. I'm by turns excited, panicked, giddy, and woefully unprepared. I have seventeen thousand things to do before my flight takes off, but before that happens, I thought I'd let you all know where I'm going to be this week, both at RT and online.

ROMANTIC TIMES CONVENTION - IN PERSON!

Wednesday, April 28, 3:30 pm -- Club RT. Come hang out with me and LB Gregg, Samantha Kane, Rebecca York, and Mari Freeman as we do whatever it is we're supposed to do in Club RT. (I understand there's something called a pose-down for the cover models happening then? Might be worth investigating...)

Thursday, April 29, 4 - 6 pm -- RT Book Reviews Awards. The winners have already been announced on the RT website, so I can finally tell you guys that Lessons Learned won for best Small Press Contemporary Romance. Whee! I'll be at the ceremony to pick up my award. (Which is still MIND BOGGLING to me. O.o)

Saturday, May 1, 11 am - 2 pm -- Giant Book Fair. Open to all RT attendees, and also to the general public for a $5 entry fee. Expand your TBR pile! I'll be signing my RT Award Winning contemporary romance, Lessons Learned.

Saturday, May 2, 2:30 pm -- Lunch with Lucy Monroe and friends. This event has currently reached its attendance limit, but if you're part of the group, be sure to say hi!

STAYING AT HOME? FIND ME ONLINE!

Monday, April 26, noon -- Reader At Home Conference, Lucy Monroe's Blog. I'll be blogging about getting ready for RT. Be sure to drop in throughout the week! There are tons of fabulous authors participating, and dozens of prizes being given away.

Thursday, April 30 -- Samhain Blog. Learn about one of my least-favorite activities.
ALL WEEK LONG: I'm not sure what the status is for internet access at the convention hotel, but I know I can twitter from my phone, so if you're not following me yet and want to hear the latest in real time click here. Warning: My twitter timeline is generally full of excessive exclamation points, capslock abuse, and talk of German soap operas.
As things change/get added, I'll try to update this post. And anyone who comments either here or on the Samhain blog post this week will be entered in a drawing to win a free RT-themed gift! (I'm leaving out the RAH conference post, because Lucy is already giving away so many prizes there.)
See you around!

Bonus Book BIN Wednesday - I Put A Spell On You

There's a great new anthology out from Torquere today you may want to check out. Here's the deets:

I Put A Spell On You

stories by CC Bridges, Penelop Friday, Kiernan Kelly, Shea Meier, JL Merrow, Giselle Renarde, Kathryn Scannell, Maia Strong, and BA Tortuga

Spells are willful little things. Once uttered, they can take on a life of their own, and that's usually when the trouble begins…

The spell that love casts is transformational. These nine m/m/f ménage stories are about the bonds that go beyond words, and to places no one expects.

In "Bad Hoodoo," BA Tortuga demonstrates the perils of playing diva in voodoo country. "Play Music, Play Magic" by Maia Strong relates the gentler side of a witch's power as she celebrates her homecoming. Sometimes, though, a witch is not enough--in "The Antithesis of Magic," JL Merrow shows how all the pieces must come together for magic to truly bind. Nor is a witch's magic always benevolent, as the lovers find out in "Ironheart," by Shea Meier. And in CC Bridges' "The Shore House," there is no witch at all--only her wisdom to guide a novice hand.

Some lovers, too, are inherently magical. Sylphs and undines are simply themselves in Penelope Friday's "The Birth of the Year," while Titania's crew raises their usual mayhem in Giselle Renarde's "Midsummer Morning Woods." In "The Winter King," by Kathryn Scannell, ancient gods manifest for their worshippers. Finally, in "Sleeping With Monsters," Kiernan Kelly looks at the spell itself to find the magic there.

I've read Play Music, Play Magic and it's great! Maia is also holding a contest on her blog today, so stop by and comment for your chance to win. And if you're looking for a great read, run on over to Torquere and Buy It Now!

I'll Take Romance...

In honor of Valentine's Day, I thought I'd share my five favorite things about the romance genre. Hope you enjoy!

5. Romance novels are hopeful. In a world swimming in cynicism, it's nice to lose myself in a dose of hope for a while.

4. They aren't all the same. Despite their reputation, there are as many different romance novels as there are happy couples in the world. Though the outcome is often similar, the journey is always as individual as the people (or characters) involved.

3. The characters! I love getting to know people like Sam Starrett, P.J Morgan, Tess Gannon, Ethan Crane, and the Bridgertons through the pages of a book. (Bonus points if you can identify the authors or books these characters are from.)

2. The settings. I can travel all over the world - and beyond - when I read a romance.

1. The stories. Whether it's contemporary, historical, paranormal, m/m, suspense, futuristic - there is a world of genres tucked inside the Romance label.

What's your favorite thing about romance? Let me know in the comments, and I'll choose one poster to win a Valentine's gift!

A Winner, an Announcement, and a Recipe!

Whew! Today's blog post is chock-full of stuff that really isn't related to each other. But what the heck, it's Wednesday. Why not?

First, congratulations to HEATHER MAC, winner of Margaret Mallory's Knight of Pleasure. Hope you enjoy the book once your finals are over! Just send your address off-blog and I'll be sure Margaret can get in touch with you.

Second, just in case you missed it yesterday when I was bouncing and flailing and squeeeing all over the internet, my book Lessons Learned has been nominated for an RT Reviewer's Choice Award! It's one of four books nominated in the Indie Press Contemporary Romance category. Color me absolutely gobsmacked! It was totally unexpected and I am so thrilled. Winners will be announced in April at the RT Convention.

Third, it's party day over on the Nine Naughty Novelists' blog! We're answering holiday questions and everyone who comments on the post will be entered in our contest!

Fourth, here's my contribution to the group blog post on NNN - a recipe for Almond Butter Smash Cookies, one of my favorite holiday treats.

2 cups butter, softened
1 cup sugar
4 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons almond extract

Cream together butter and sugar. Add remaining ingredients and beat well.

Roll into 1 inch balls, then roll in sugar (regular or colored). Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Press flat with bottom of glass or cookie stamp. Bake at 350* for 12-15 minutes, or until edges are light golden brown.

Easy-peasy! And oh, so delicious. :)

Forty Facts About Kate - Day the Third

So.

Ten more things to tell, huh?

Okay, here we go...

20. I love buying makeup and skincare products during bonus giveaway times, even though I rarely use what I get.

19. The last musical I was in was A Chorus Line. I played the "don't dance!" girl, who gets kicked out of the audition five minutes into the show.

18. My favorite car colors were used in the late sixties/early seventies, those eye-popping shades with fabulous names. Go Mango, Panther Pink, SubLime, and my personal favorite, InViolet (aka Plum Crazy).

17. I love, love, love my iPhone. Love it.

16. I've always thought Romeo and Juliet is the worst Shakespearean play to teach to high school freshmen. Two teenagers who kill themselves because they can't date? Please. Why not A Midsummer Night's Dream? The rotating crushes in that play would fit high school perfectly.

15. I once discovered a significant error in a favorite cookbook. Unfortunately, that meant I ended up serving raw chicken cordon bleu. (The half an hour cooking time had been left off the recipe, leaving the dish with only five minutes pan-frying on each side.)

14. Here's a sneak peek at my newest venture: The Video. Bonus points if you can identify which pic is my avatar for the group!

13. I once spent hours researching why the widows in the play Riders to the Sea wore red petticoats over their heads. AND I STILL DON'T KNOW.

12. Favorite pizza - a tie between Hawaiian and BBQ chicken.

11. Twenty of my top 25 most played songs on iTunes were purchased after I discovered them on YouTube.

One day to go! See you back here Saturday with ten final facts - and the last chance to post a comment and be entered to win!

Forty Facts About Kate - The Countdown Begins

*note: these facts will be random and jumbled together, sort of like me.

40. When I was a kid, we had a cat named Muffin. Muffin liked to get, erm, amorous on the deck outside the family room before we had her fixed. Being a kid, I worried that she kept getting in "fights". My parents would respond by telling me to go practice my piano. Ever since then, whenever the topic of sex comes up, the stock response is "go practice your piano".

39. After my first book came out, Mom called to tell me she'd learned a whole bunch of new piano pieces while reading it.

38. My feet are almost always cold.

37. In college, my friends and I staged a fight in the middle of Red Square on campus. Our storyline? A couple was arguing with each other across the square, but every time one of us said something, another couple "translated" it for us. At the end, the two couples switched places. We took our bows and walked off.

36. I once sang karaoke in a Philipine restaurant in the middle of Munich. Under duress. (The person who'd taken us out to dinner insisted.) The song? Thanks to a dearth of English-language titles, I ended up butchering The Theme From Mahogany.

35. The year I started teaching at a junior high, I paid student prices for lunch for almost two months until the lunch lady realized I was a teacher. (Sadly, I wasn't even aware I was getting away with anything until it was too late.)

34. My first paid writing experience was winning first place in a "flash fiction" contest put on by the local community newspaper. I earned $75 for a story about a girl who turned into a pizza.

33. I'm left handed.

32. The first play I was ever in was Charley's Aunt, in high school.
31. My husband opened a bag of halloween candy yesterday and did not hide it from me. This was a tactical error. I have a very hard time saying no to chocolate.
More tomorrow! And remember, every comment gets you an entry into the prize giveaway!

It's Banned Books Week!

Again, you say? Didn't we talk about this just last year?

Sadly, yes. Books are still being banned, so the ALA Banned Books Week continues. This year, it's occurring from September 26 to October 3.

The American Library Association recorded 513 challenged is 2008, but that total is estimated to be only 20-25% of the actual number of banned or challenged books. These books include the Harry Potter series, Barbara Kingsolver's Animal Dreams (a personal favorite), Lois Lowry's award-winning The Giver, and classics such as Slaughterhouse Five, Of Mice and Men, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and To Kill A Mockingbird.

My goal this week is to identify and read a challenged book that I haven't read before. How about you? Will you join me in this challenge?

Post your selection in the comments section, and one commenter will win a prize at the end of the week!

Alex was sure that he had never been quite so exquisitely tense in his life.

Brynn Dexter was asleep in his arms.

He shifted slightly, wishing his body wasn’t reacting in quite so predictable a manner. But he was, after all, a man. And Brynn was—a desirable woman.

She stirred a little in her sleep. Although the royal plane was luxurious, it was still a challenge to sleep sitting up, even on a deeply padded leather couch.

Her eyelids had started drooping the moment they boarded the plane, and Alex had suggested she use the bed in the sleeping quarters at the rear of the plane to rest. Indignantly, she informed him that she wasn’t the slightest bit tired.

Then she had taken a seat next to him on the couch for takeoff. By the time they were in the air, Brynn was slumped against his shoulder, breathing deeply.

Amused, he considered taking her back to the bed and tucking her in, but swiftly vetoed that idea. Brynn and bed was a dangerous combination in his mind. He was just about to move aside and give her space to stretch out on the couch when she wrapped an arm about his waist and snuggled into the crook of his neck.

She smelled like a citrus grove.

So now he was well and truly trapped, both by the slim woman wrapped around him and by the emotions barreling down on him. He should be at the conference table at the front of the plane, working on his paperwork. He should be anywhere but here.

The problem was, he didn’t want to be anywhere else.

Besides, he hadn’t bothered to bring any work with him on this trip—which was yet another sign that he wasn’t acting like himself lately. And even if he had brought a stack of papers to read and sign, he had a sinking suspicion that he would have chosen to act as Brynn’s pillow anyway.

He sighed, glancing down at the woman sleeping against his shoulder. The two of them were alone in the opulent interior of the plane, having been given a little privacy by Niles and the two flight attendants. All had worked with the royal family long enough to know how much he appreciated a break from the hovering that seemed to go with the territory of being royalty.

After all, what could happen to him on a private plane several thousand feet in the air?

He let his arm drop just a fraction so his fingertips touched Brynn’s bare arm. Tempted beyond belief, he traced delicate patterns, wishing he could explore the soft skin that lay hidden behind her casual outfit. Brynn shifted again, the curve of her breast brushing against his side. Alex dropped his head back against the couch, wishing he didn’t have such an active imagination. He knew what he wanted to happen; he also knew it was an impossibility.

Trying in vain to turn his thoughts in a less dangerous direction, he glanced around the interior of the plane. Those packages which contained clothing that did not need to be altered and delivered were stowed at the front of the cabin, a neatly stacked tower of boxes and bags. A blue-and-gray striped gift bag was tucked in back, barely visible behind the rest.

After agreeing to leave Brynn to her own devices at the dress designer’s, Alex had spent an hour or so just wandering through the shopping district of Milan, trailed by Niles. He’d picked up a little statue of a horse, knowing that Carissa’s current obsession with ponies would make it a popular gift. And then the display in a tiny shop, tucked away on the edge of a piazza, had caught his eye.

Involuntarily, he glanced at his sleeping companion. It had been an impulse purchase, but he couldn’t bring himself to regret it. It was perfect for Brynn. Now he just had to find the right time to give it to her.

If he gave it to her at all. Really, it was too personal, too intimate for someone who was, after all, just his daughter’s nanny.

Except he couldn’t seem to make himself believe that anymore. Something had shifted for him, some invisible connection that seemed to grow stronger each time they were together.

It was more than a physical attraction, he mused, glancing at the woman sleeping on his shoulder. Although he could not deny the ache of desire that curled through him, it went far beyond that now.

Her passion, her joy, her enthusiasm—all aspects of her personality that made her even more attractive than just her outward beauty. And it was becoming much more difficult to remember the reasons he had to stay away from her.

Brynn shifted in her sleep, her curls brushing his face. He breathed in the scent of her shampoo, that citrusy blend that captured her sunshine spirit perfectly.

When he turned to look at her again, Brynn was just opening her eyes. The dreamy, captivating glow in her doe-soft eyes was quickly replaced by embarrassment.

“Oh my God.” She sat up, shoving the curls out of her face. “I am so sorry. I can’t believe I fell asleep on you.”

“It’s all right.”

“Please tell me I didn’t snore. Or—or drool on your shoulder or something.” She lifted a hand to her mouth, surreptitiously checking it for moisture.

Alex knew without a doubt no woman had ever mentioned drooling to him before. Enchanted by her artlessness, he reached over and captured her hand in his. “You were perfectly appropriate.”
He ignored the fact that with the direction of his thoughts while she slept, she was alone in that regard. “I am glad you felt comfortable enough to rest.”

“Exhausted is more like it.” She rolled her shoulders. “Who knew shopping could take so much out of you?”

His mother. His former wife. Most of the women in his social circle. To them, shopping was a blood sport, and to the victor went the spoils. Shopping with them was wearing.

With Brynn, however, it was a delight. Like a prism, she took experiences that were common to him and fractured them, adding a wash of brilliant color to everything. Unexpected, but enjoyable all the same.

She sat up, moving away from him. He missed the subtle pressure of her head on his shoulder, the soft brush of curls against his cheek. He missed her rhythmic breathing as she slept.

What would it be like to spend the night with her wrapped in his arms?
