Thursday Thirteen #12 -- Thirteen Children's Books My Kids Love!

Thursday Thirteen – Thirteen Children’s Books My Kids Love

Three kids, different ages, it’s quite a diverse list!

1. Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus (The six year old’s favorite. I think it includes just about every girl-friendly theme you could think of, including flying horses, princesses, ice skating, magic jewels, and fuzzy animals.)

2. The BFG, or pretty much anything by Roald Dahl

3. Any Junie B. Jones book

4. Barney’s Alphabet Soup (Yeah, I know. What can I say, three year olds think soup made with ice cream, jelly and ketchup is hilarious.)

5. The Cheerios Book

6. Go Dog Go

7. Twelve Dancing Princesses

8. Time For Bed

9. Pajama Time

10. Never Put A Frog In The Kitchen Sink

11. Class Clown (most recent book read by the eight year old.)

12. Any I Spy book

13. Where the Sidewalk Ends

I can’t wait until they’re a little older; I’ve got lots of faves from childhood I'd love to share with them. My own list would have included Trixie Belden, The Dark Is Rising series, Harry Potter (which I read as an adult, but I think still counts).

Do you have a favorite kids book? Or a kid who insists on reading/hearing the same book over and over? Help expand my kidlets’ library!

My grandchildren loved the "Spot" books best, and had them all memorized before they were two.

Wonderful list, Kate. Introducing children to books and the wonderful world of reading is one of the most positive things a parent can do.

I adored Nancy Drew when I was a kid and have a huge collection today. My daughter loved the Little House on the Prairie books when she was young. And we both loved the Dr. Seuss books (I still do!)

I have boys so my list a little different...
But they LOVE the I SPY books (there are some AMAZING computer versions that both my 3 yr old and 7 yr old cannot get enough of!)

Dr. Seuss is a fave.

My kid's lists would look amazingly similiar to yours except for the Frog in the Sink. Never heard of that one. I've been buying things like Superfudge and Ramona Quimby from my childhood to read when they're a tad older. My oldest is 8 :)

I'm waiting for Brianna to get older too. I've been saving my books for 20 years, just for her :)

One book I love that people don't know much about is The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles by Julie Andrews Edwards (yes, the actress).

But like you, I can't wait for the days of Trixie Belden!

Great list, Kate.

Do you remember the Katie John books by Mary Calhoun? Katie John was my hero. :)

Okay, you gotta tell me. What does BFG stand for? :o) I don't have kids, so I'm a little out of this loop! :o)

I absolutely loved Shel Silverstein (Hmm..is that spelled right?) when I was a kid.

Awesome list, Kate! I totally relate. I have four rugrats myself, and they range in their reading material as well. My daughter's favorite author is Roald Dahl. :)

The 12 Dancing Princesses is a big hit around here lately, along with anything princess related. Hardy Boys for my oldest along with Bionicles and my middle dude is digging Encyclopedia Brown.

Thumbelina was one of my favorites, as were all the Dr. Seuss books. I wonder if I still have them somewhere? Great list!

What, no Goodnight, Moon??

Actually, my all-time favorite when I was a kid is one no longer in print, Sophie and Gussie, about two squirrel friends. When I was a bit older my faves were Mandy by Julie Andrews Edwards and the Trixie Belden series -- still have all my books and can't wait to pass them on to my youngest niece.

Great list!
My 3 year old loves a book called "Cowboy Bunnies" before she goes to sleep. She also loves this great Bernstein Bears book called "He Bear, She bear" which basically says that you can be anything you want...from training fleas in a circus to flying a jumbo jet. You gotta love the Bernstein Bears :)
Cheers

Donna -- the Spot books are great!

DDD -- We've got the complete Little House series, as well as a few Nancy Drew. Oh, and I can't believe I didn't mention Anne of Green Gables! What kind of girl am I? :)

Wylie and DDD -- I think it would have been tough to narrow down to just one Dr. Seuss book. They love them all!

Annmarie -- You've got to check out Frog in the Kitchen Sink. Fun illustrations, great rhymes, and big googly eyes to wobble around while you read it! And my oldest loved Superfudge -- but we're discovering that whatever she read last is her new favorite. :)

Angie -- I knew there was a reason we get along so well! All hail Trixie Belden! :) And I'll have to check out the whangdoodle book. Sounds fun!

Carolan -- No, never heard of Katie Johns. Of course, now I'll have to fix that situation.

Amanda -- Shel S. was a factor in my daughter wanting to be a poet when she grew up -- for about a week. :)

Elle -- The meaning of BFG is one of the mysteries in the book -- but I'll tell ya anyway. :) It's Big Friendly Giant.

Becka -- Roald Dahl rocks, doesn't he?

Lauren -- I was a huge Encyclopedia Brown fan when I was a kid (along with Harriet the Spy). Think I'll have to rustle some up for my kidlets.

Bianca -- Yep, I love me some Dr. Seuss! (I *say* these books are for my kids, but we know the truth...)

igoddess -- Can't say as I've heard of your favorites before -- but they sound intriguing!
